Democratic Party leadership — before you start asking for money again to beat back the evil Republicans in 2018, I have a humble request. If you were part of the group that dissed Bernie and his supporters, that talked tough about climate change but then supported new pipelines, if you tried to school us about how we had to bail out Wall Street after its 2008 rip-off of the economy, and if you lectured the working poor, the insecure, and the indebted about how prosperous the economy is — if you were one of those people, my humble request is that you resign. Turn the party over to the next generation and to those who knew all along that business as usual wouldn’t cut it.
The Democratic Party needs to be re-invented, from the bottom up, and that means no more super-delegates, no more insiders who will sell out our aspirations to the “realistic” politics of Wall Street greed, trade deals that only benefit big corporations, pipelines that carry the fuels that poison our water and destroy climate stability.
What you called “realistic” was always impossible. The only thing that is realistic is authentic change — as unflinching as the water protectors at Standing Rock, as clear about hard truths as Black Lives Matter, as full of heart and passion as young Bernie supporters, as focused on the lives of ordinary Americans as the successful campaigners for a higher minimum wage. And that is change you don’t understand. Please resign now. There’s a lot of work to do to rebuild the party and have any chance in 2018, or really, any chance of a future.
